Braiding hair was not exclusive to black people. Styles like French braids, goddess braids and etc existed in non black communities. Black people were/are more into skilled intricate braiding. Also one is more likely to see cornrow intricate hairstyles on black people.
The only issue I have with this is non blacks specifically whites acting like it is something new and discovered. This country is mostly white so I am not surprised when they make something popular after it has been in the black community for years.
I saw many black women get called manly, ugly, and boring for having cornrows then the same hairstyle get praise on a non black person. I'm not shocked at all.
