Album is cool but the lack of drums and/or under stated drums trend needs to die in hip-hop.

A lot of these beats would sound 100x better with solid drums.

Fred.
Bro at this point I'm trying to just find a way to enjoy it, because I don't even think it's a trend anymore. It's been over a decade of drumless joints being all over the place, and if anything I actually think we'll hear more of it. We're in the era of Nicholas Craven and Jay Versace producers on the indie scene that grew up on Roc Marci and just OD and do nothing but drumless beats.

At least with cats like Madlib and Alchemist they mix it up a lot, and a lot depends on the artist as well. As far as regular Alc collaborators, I always brace for more understated drums with Currensy, Earl, or Roc, but with Boldy, Benny, Conway, or Evidence I know I can rely on more drums there. Gibbs can lean in either direction. Even with Madlib, Gibbs takes a fair amount of understated drum stuff.

But at this point I don't think rappers are gonna stop picking beats without drums all of a sudden. This shyt has been going strong for a minute.

I don't want to be the salty old head that just can't enjoy what's out. It's not my favorite trend either, and I'm not saying you're salty if you're not with it. But personally, I'm getting tired of feeling annoyed when I hear certain beats come on and the drums just never hit.

Really disappointing people are still using that racist vulture for artwork.

Literally giving him money after what he was saying about black people the other year smh

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
Just ran through PT4 and I actually think its better than this. Two very dope albums. I always wrote Currensy off as a scion of Devin The Dude and I don’t do “weed rap” but Currensy has a really great ear for production
Bro check out PT1 and 2. Check out Covert Coup. Check out This Ain’t No Mixtape. Gran Turismo as well.

There's a few exceptions like DOOM's "Avalanche" or Gibbs "Cataracts" but it's virtually impossible for me to enjoy a drumless/understated drum beat.

No matter who made it or who is rapping over it. It just comes off as lazy.

I'd honestly rather hear a trap beat than that shyt, and I don't even like trap beats. I'm an 80's/90's head....I need some drums man. I can't nod my head to ambient sounds or low ass drums.

Which beats on here would sound better with harder drums?

"No Yeast", "Corvette Rally Stripes", "The Tonight Show", "Louis Baggage", "Endurance Runners", and "Kool & The Gang".

All either have no drums or Alc just beefed up the bass line from the original sample and the snare sounds like he's tapping a paper plate with a pencil.
I'm not a fan of that sound. :hubie:

Corvette Rally Stripes to me is the one on here that would've sounded better with drums. It's got an aggressive and menacing vibe, and it actually does have some drums, but they're just very subdued. @choc_cardigan tagging you too. The rest on here without drums I wasn't annoyed with.

@hex I thought Louis Baggage sounded perfect without drums.

I don't hate them as much as @hex does. But I do think almost every drumless beat I've ever heard would've sounded doper with them. I love them in small doses. I thought Al used them perfectly on Price of Tea (I think he only had 3 on there) and on Lulu (only 1 of them) and on Super Tecmo (only 1 of them).

Like on Lulu...if The Contract had drums on it, I actually think it would've made the beat worse and taken away from the vibe on there. Hoard 90, Crime Pays, Freestyle Shyt, Grey October...same thing.

hex is also right that old men yelling at clouds doesn't make the most sense here when the cats doing this are mostly 40 or older. Alchemist, Madlib, Roc Marci, Muggs...these aren't super young producers.
