According to every significant defensive statistic, Derrick Rose is an awful defender. His -2.68 defensive RPM is ranked 82nd amongst qualified point guards. According to Basketball-Reference, Rose’s defensive rating is 115 (worst of his career), defensive box plus minus is -2.2 (second worst of his career), and opponents post a 114.3 offensive rating with Rose on the court versus a 108 offensive rating when Rose if off the court.Bottom line, New York is a better defensive team without Rose on the court.

Rose’s tunnel vision and lack of passing/generating assists for a player with the second highest usage rate (25.7%) on the Knicks, per Basketball-Reference, simply is not conducive to the Triangle offense. No matter you’re opinion of the Knicks use of the Triangle, everyone on the court needs to be a willing passer and Rose does not fit that description. As detailed in Kelly Scaletta’s Bleacher Report column, Derrick Rose (along with Carmelo Anthony) is amongst the Top-10 in “stickiest hands.”

The question is, will teams still want him? He can create off the dribble and get buckets still (although not at the rate he used to), but he is a massive defensive liability.
