Stop it, We drafted two players better than Chalmers in 2015 and our track record of developing undrafted talent is straight.

Miami Heat sign guard Luis Montero, waive center Keith Benson
October 18, 2016
| Filed in: 2016-17 season, Tom D'Angelo

The Heat have signed former Trail Blazers guard Luis Montero.

MIAMI – With the season opener a little more than a week away, the Heat have made another roster move, signing guard Luis Montero.

To make room on the 20-man preseason roster, Miami waived center Keith Benson.

The move will allow the Heat to place both players on its D-League roster in Sioux Falls if they are not claimed by another team. Because both will have spent the majority of their preseason with the Heat, the organization holds their affiliate rights.

Montero, 23, is a 6-foot-7 shooting guard from the Dominican Republic. He appeared in 12 games with Portland last season. He scored 14 points, grabbed four rebounds and had one assist in 42 minutes. He also appeared in six postseason games with Portland, scoring eight points.

The Trail Blazers waived Montero on Saturday. He played in one preseason game, scoring three points with one assist and one block.

“He’s one of these long, athletic, combo wing guys that we’ve had success with,” coach Erik Spoelstra said. “We were actually surprised he was available and wanted to take advantage of that.”

While with Santa Cruz in the D-League last season, Montero appeared in four games, all starts, and averaged 16.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists. He shot 41.2 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from three-point range.

Montero was undrafted in 2015 after playing one year at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, N.Y., where he averaged 15.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists.

Benson was signed by the Heat last month. He appeared in three preseason games with Miami averaging 7.3 points and 3.3 rebounds in 10.9 minutes.

“You saw what he’s capable of doing in the last game against Minnesota,” Spoelstra said. “We spent some time developing him the couple of off seasons and he had a very good year last year in Sioux Falls. We want to continue that relationship as long as we can even though he’s not with us here hopefully we can transition him to Sioux Falls for another season.

“He’s just one of those talented bigs you want to spend time with and we want to spend more time with him and see where we can take that and he’s gotten a lot better.”

The Heat’s roster at 20 players with a Monday deadline to get down to 15 players for the regular season.

------------------------

I feel like our D-League team is going to be stacked.

Ira Winderman: Heat paid $925,000 partial guarantees to potentially get Briante Weber, Rodney McGruder, Okaro White, Keith Benson, Stefan Jankovic, Vashil Fernandez, Luis Montero to D-League affiliate

:whew:

We going for another D-League title :whew:

go into the summer of 2017 with 60 million in cap space and maybe 1st rd draft picks in a great draft. I'm with it. tank and maybe draft your next franchise superstar, a another good player with the sac pick and add them to Whiteside, Winslow, & Richardson. :yeshrug:

I'm much more intrigued by the draft picks than the cap space.

Barring a Whiteside injury its not going to be a tank year, they'll have to do their homework and get a decent blue chip prospect like they did J-Rich. For all intents and purposes Whiteside is this franchises' "superstar" and unlike a rookie we dont have to wait 3-4 years for that to materialize.
