You're thinking of Boston Legal, spinoff of The Practice that was in the shared universe as breh said earlier. Boston Legal/Boston Public/Ally McBeal/The Practice were in a shared unvierse like the L&O shows.William Shatner brought so much fukkery
They did a couple official crossovers (Ally McBeal+The Practice and Boston Public+The Practice) and smaller characters from each show would pop up on other shows pretty regularly.
