Kids aren't committing to defense because they don't want to look bad in front of everyone.
They don't want to get crossed up, or dunked on, or caught flat-footed, or back pedaling, so they just stop trying. If they get beat, they reach and shrug. Their help goes, "he's not my man."
That's the mentality. Seriously. It's sad.
