Story is that on the night after the show they kicked it and had a "fling". Dude didn't want anyone to know about it so he shot and killed him. There was a documentary about it on one of the Netflix shows

I never knew the full story. According to this, the shooting happened in 1995 but show continued until 2003. Doesn't seem like this was a factor in the show ending at all.
