I think "establishment" is overblown only when it gets divorced from real problems and becomes a gotcha phrase.
When establishment means, "That politician has chosen to side with the power-brokers who keep his party funded rather than siding with the people who voted him into office", I think it's one of the most important political distinctions of our era.
In 2008 Obama ran as a non-establishment politician and then immediately governed as an establishment politician. In truth he had always performed as an establishment politician in previous offices too but we blinded ourselves out of hope for something new.
In 2018 The Squad ran as non-establishment politicians and so far have continued to act as such in office.
The difference between 2008 and 2018 might be the difference between Trump winning in 2016 and Trump not even being relevant. And depending on what happens going forward we might be saying the same thing in 2024 or beyond.
Obama was a first term Senator who had ideas. Once that democratic mandate was lost you have to negotiate. Every outsider eventually becomes the establishment in order to get shyt done when they no longer control the levers of power.
