I have a feeling that this method of shipping is due to the production yields and to get things to the states quicker, they are flying them. Otherwise, you ship across water for the cheaper rates.

No, just to get more on shelves. The rationale was different though, it wasn't until very late that Sony added the 8GB of DDR4 ram. That was a big game changer for them.
