I've worked in a call centre in a bank for the fraud department so I'm just giving my comment.

I'm not justifying what he did, I don't even listen to his music, but for the specific crimes he committed, the victims lives weren't ruined like people on here are saying they were.
In most cases of ID fraud, when they realize it has been done to them, they can dispute withdrawals, loans taken out against your name etc. and the banks will pay them back within 2-4 weeks after an investigation (Most banks only send a select few cases to the police for investigation, so its just a verification process for most). 9/10 times its as simple as that. (Hence my not stealing from the people comment.)

Its a nuisance if it happens to you, could disrupt your plans for that month. The same thing has happened to me a couple years ago, but saying its ruining peoples lives is overboard imo. Especially where in the vast majority of cases, banks pay out in full.
