If I were the sketch writer I would have vetoed it.
I don't think this is racist, but the likelyhood of it being seen as racist is so high it creates a problem.
The problem being, that to do it makes those involved seem as though they are either disconected or aloof, which again circles you back again to inherent racism.
The joke/payoff is that he went "Apeshyt" which is a common expression without any racial context.
I've seen Upright Citizens Brigade do improv live, and been to the Laugh Factory several times. I like In Living Color, Human Giant, Inside Amy Schumer... Kroll Show. Key/Pelle... so I've seen alot of sketch comedy, and some is defenitely racist. This isn't. But, its still a bad look.
