I've only seen Jay twice, WTT tour which is one of the best concerts I've been to, and MGHC which is probably the worst concert I've ever attended. I actually left annoyed that I paid for that.

I went to see Jay-Z in '97 on his first national tour in Dayton, OH. It was the No Way Out tour and he was an opening act for the Bad Boy family. His stage show was nothing special. He just rapped with Dame on stage and had the huge Roc-A-Fella banner in the back ground. That was it. I bought RD when it dropped and was a fan, but the crowd wasnt with him then. This cat came in our section after his performance and just chilled. He quit after a few shows in. To see where dude came from over the years with his stage show to where he is now is amazing.

he made a good point for a dumb ass..

if you got HIT records, you gonna be alright on stage. I do think Jay has a ton of charisma now than early on. He is a really good performer now

Actually no Jay-Z has the best live performance for a hip-hop artist. Best stage presence and doesn't have to do anything extra. You only realize how good he is after seeing alot of terrible rappers on stage.

Thats YOUR opinion. But fact is that MANY people said it even back then. There is a reason why people would leave after or come once DMX/Meth & Red did their thing too. Cuz X & Jay headlined. But even then people would say the same thing. Even prior to that, as Reasonable Doubt was out & albums after. So that is a thing people always did say about him. Of course opinions vary but many people said it. Even he mentioned it during the RD/Vol. 1 days i believe & even as Vol. 2 was out.

Now? Depends on who you ask. His production on stage is larger, same with Kanye since they have alot more $ to play with seeing as they can bring in alot of $ of their fame..but i PERSONALLY dont think his stage show is that great still. But he got a catalouge by now which rocks the house compared to 1,2 or 3 albums out as back then. So theres a difference.
People would leave after DMX and Red/Meth? Really? What City was this? I went to the Blue Cross Arena and a month later at the Arrowhead in Anaheim and it was great both times. I also went to the LA concert for the Blueprint Lounge Tour. I'm hearing this story of terrible performances for the first time and Ive been to a lot of Jay Z concerts besides the first 2 tours i mentioned above. Only thing that i can say i didnt like about the performances was the use of "hype" men like Bleek or Dame on stage.

The hip-hop heavyweight was modest when talking about his early stage presence. “All my early years? Forget it. I was a horrible performer,” he admitted, realizing that he needed to up his game when touring with DMX in 1999. “DMX tore me to pieces. I remember being stunned.”

It was then Jay knew that he had to raise the bar. “[DMX] had me really working. But I had to figure this out,” he explained. “If you want to be a headliner, you better put on a headline show.”
