The purpose of protest is to bring a controversial issue front and center, when a lot of people are watching/around. Protests are not supposed comfortable, at all.

And by virtue of being intrusive and controversial and making people feel uncomfortable (which, again, is the whole point) means that protesting will always have the potential to "hurt your pockets" or cause backlash... regardless of whether it's kneeling during the anthem, wearing an "i can't breath" shirt, doing what those wnba women did, or finding something "else" (
