It’s crazy he only got 3 albums in his discography in like 30 years and it’s still more than enough. You can do that when you got multiple classics. It’s crazy how on the same album he had a song like “shyt, got damn, MF” then ended the album off on “higher” which is like a gospel song

The crazy thing is how long of gap of time it was between Voodoo and Black Messiah

14 years between those 2 albums and keep in mind, Voodoo was only his second album. before that, the gap had only been 5 years between Brown Sugar and Voodoo, which is a gap but not like it was between Voodoo and Black Messiah

I can't think of any other artist in recent memory, who's ever pulled a move like that and came back with good success

can't even say Sade because back in the 80's, Sade put out Diamond Life and Promise back to back (85' and 86') then came back in 88' with Stronger than Pride and then she slowly started with the breaks between albums. Next album was in 92' with Love Deluxe and then the huge gap of time until 2000's Lover's Rock.

Although, when D' was out of the spotlight, he was still working on music ever so often.

The sparks from the profound and profane colliding is the 'soul' in 'soul music'. :wow:

I'd go as far as saying that all of the soul greats have some of that contradiction in their music.

In the D'Angelo doc, one of the band members bounces mid way through the tour on some religious tip, and D and the rest of the band all seem like 'Yeah - being who we are, and where we come from, any of us could get that same 'call' :manny:"

Only other example I can think of is Guns N’ Roses. They took 15 years between albums and seen success but some people don’t count the album they dropped as a GNR album because the album didn’t have all of its original members
