I think it’s equally dangerous to be coddling cacs and trying to intellectualise them. Trump reminds them of that character in every cac family - the racist uncle who is a “straight shooter” and “isn’t afraid to be PC”. Not everyone is just racist because they vote for him but his racist agenda is quite clearly a non-factor for them at best.

It’s very simplistic to say it was all racism. Conservatives are pro gun, and keep being told Liberals want to take guns away. That has nothing to do with race. The religious right is always going to vote red because of abortion. Those are 2 locked in voter bases. You also have to consider location. Democrat policies tend to favor corporations. A lot of people in middle America work for small businesses. So it’s beneficial for them to vote red, because the small businesses can stay afloat, and they can keep their jobs.
Trump was the first Republican candidate in a long time that gave attention to those working class white voters who hear every other group being mentioned, but them. Add in, he says a lot of things they think, but are afraid to say.
