Song isn't really him at his best. He's better with the harder tracks.

He's a talented dude. I hear the "something's missing" thing a lot, and I can see why. He's covered being able to rap, but I think what holds him back is maybe he hasn't done anything that really stands out. I dug the first couple of mixtapes, but I can't say I heard anything on them that wow'd me. He doesn't need to go mainstream. That shouldn't be a goal for any MC. If you happen to, great. But that doesn't make or break a career.

I think he does need to start making more memorable shyt that would stand out. A lot of his joints come off on the generic side at times. He needs to carve his own lane and do something that sets him apart from what everyone else is doing. That should be the goal.

He can rap for sure but he just sucks at crafting songs. Like there's nothing that ever really grabs me about his shyt besides the beats. It's just..rapping. Where's the charisma? Even some rappers like Kodak & Bobby can still give you lines that stick out that people can quote and chant. As much as Dave East can rap he just doesn't provide shyt about him that stick out other than being a new NY rapper sounding like your avg NY rapper. it's like he approaches every beat with the same goal just spit bars & punchlines and can't craft an actual song with those things that can really grab you.

Troy Ave gets lot of hate for but at least he can do that or provide a super catchy hook in between some average bars & punchlines

Subject matter/versatility.

Every record is the same shyt. Brag raps and street talk but he can't do it like the nikkas from the classic NYC era.

I have about 50 East tracks on my iPod, and I usually throw them on shuffle when I listen. He basically makes the same record over and over again. I honestly have a hard time knowing which track is which, title-wise, because it's all the same shyt. LOL!!!

You can be a street MC, that's not an issue. But it gets boring if you don't take us someplace else in a different way. Emceeing isn't just about the ability to rap. Once you get to that space when you can make actual songs, and diversify your catalog, that's when things change for you. Illmatic was a street album, and probably one of the shortest ever. But Nas took us mad places in less than 10 tracks. Different flows, different backdrops and vibes, etc. That's what makes you stand out. You can't keep dropping the same shyt.

Anyways his voice sounds pretty similar to Guru on this track. Or at least in the beginning

Song is good, beat is nice but nothing special. East is missing something I can't put my finger on it.

Dude is an awesome spitter and isn't "radio-friendly" as far as his appeal.

Matter fact I saw one vid where he features on a Trey Songz song and it was kinda cringe-worthy to me. I don't want him anywhere near a Trey Songz or anything that's OBVIOUSLY made for the radio.

I hope dude has success but he's one of those artists where I selfishly hope he does NOT blow. Just keep spitn bars for the people who want to hear it. If he's not your cup of tea, i shouldn't expect to see you in any Dave East threads from here on out right?
