Unfortunately this is the view that most people have of New York rappers. thats why new New York rappers aren't gonna make it. If they sound like NY they are just seen as "average, typical NY shyt" "played out" and "if I want to hear NY I will listen to 90s rappers". If they don't sound like that then "they ain't reppin NY right", "they biting the south/west".
I C YOUR POINT BUT HE IS AN AVERAGE RAPPER
NOT DESERVED OF ANY INTERNET HYPE
NO PRESENCE ON HIS SONGS
CAN BASICALLY BE ANY RAPPER SPITTING THESE VERSES

I've been a fan since I heard him on Sway. Daves got a lot of potential.

AVERAGE FLOW, AVERAGE PRESENCE, AVERAGE RHYMES
The first two are fair criticisms he had his moments where he shined and stood out on this tape and others where he sounded generic. I see that as a charisma problem. I personally think he should have cut down to about 12 or so tracks. I think he's above average lyrically just a bit repetitive with his content.

I like East because he can spit and he's a true authentic NY nikka not on no alternative drugged out weirdo shyt or blipster boom bap tip. He dresses and has the lingo of a present day NY nikka. He also actually has an interesting background and a story to tell.

first couple joints are hot. dude can spit but i dont like the direction. just sounds like him jacking a bunch of the flavor of the month rap styles for most of the project. this really suffers from being 20 tracks because it sounds like 2 or 3 different projects in one and they sound completely different.

not very original for the most part. just a bunch of "Im Gettin Money" anthems. I expected more from someone with a Nas cosign i guess :yeshrug:

yeah i can see that.. just like Red Cafe he's dope but i just cant get into it. i tried to listen to this project a 2nd time and disliked it even more. i think hearing Forbes List first made me expect a different sound.

Dave East is talented, you can tell. The one thing I will say though that stands out the most...he lacks identity.

I hear a bit of J Cole, I hear a bit of Schoolboy Q, I hear bits and pieces of other rappers blended with him, somewhere in there is him. Dare I say he lacks an identity because NYC as a whole right now is lacking identity..and trying to re-find their lane in rap?

I said in a post earlier in this thread that he's the first NYC rapper I've heard in a LONG time that has star potential, so I'm just stating my opinion as a whole. I also tend to hold NY rappers to a higher standard.

east > vado

and i agree w/ homeboy that said he lacks identity. this is what the slow grind and artist development used to do for rappers, but has gone the way of a soundcloud account and dropping a record. east can rap, but what him and vado lack are the qualities that are gonna make the general public want to turn on their music when they wanna vibe and not just hear some type of super lyrical display. its just where we are in 2015. havent listened to the new project yet, but that cohesive easy on the ears quality is what black rose lacked, imo. meek is the last street rapper to ease into this comfort zone. we def need more.
