I remember reading this incredible dissertation someone wrote on the final scene. I wish I could find it.
It was incredibly long and detailed but it basically broke the argument down to the fact that everytime the bell on the door chimes when someone would walk in, the camera would switch to Tony's POV, and the final chime that switches to Tony's POV is all black cause he's dead
They obviously wrote it a lot better than I did there, but it made alot of sense and that's what I always went with

i think paulie and patsy are definitely involved. in that episode where they go down to florida paulie realizes tony doesnt trust him and hes gonna end up like p*ssy unless he does something. then in the last episode, the last time we see paulie is the cat staring at him outside of satriales. earlier tony said that the cat was looking at “a rat in the wall”. i think butchie worked out some deal with paulie and patsy where the bosses of both families get whacked.

Personally i dont know or really care if Tony is dead or not as I always interpreted the last scene/season about endings as a whole and about how tony lacked the principles to change for the better
Yeah I subscribe to the Paulie theory as well. He's a bit reckless but I think the show did a good job showing that he knows to put himself first in a way that doesn't make him obviously selfish or a bad friend etc. He knew he couldn't trust Tony completely anymore and given the state of NJ by the last half of season 6 he probably thought submitting to NY was the only play. There are a grip of scenes in that last half too where Paulie definitely looks surprised and a little jumpy whenever he's interacting with Tony.

Been saying this since the night it ended lol. Its obvious they set up the scene to look like he got killed, but the story didn't add up..
yeah this is a big part of it.
tony can at any point in the show be violently murdered in front of his family. in the normal course of the show we don’t feel this because hes the main character and we know he isnt gonna die in the middle of the show. the ending is the only time they’re able to communicate this with the audience

New York just used him to get rid of Phil and rid their hands of him. Best believe they still wacked him of principle. 2 birds one stone shyt. They would have lost all street cred once it got out tony killed a 5 family boss and was still breathing. That’s why they didn’t give tony his location at the meeting they wanted total deniability.
