I don't think that is really exclusive to this situation, people fall for fake stories on the daily and most often than not journalists will post them without really checking because it's an easy click bait. See it in most other industries too. The fake petition is easily one of the most common trolls there is.

Pretty much every other name I’ve learned from here. I know video games. Not the execs behind them. Ain’t nothing wrong with knowing them I guess. I’m just saying me personally, I’ve never cared. From my corner it seems like these names only matter for Stanley dissertations. We could talk hip hop artists and execs all day if you like though.
