Right, but for Rome to ask a question like that with no real evidence is entirely unprofessional. Stern loses any way he answers. If he denies, he gives the matter credence. That's why Stern asked if Rome was still beating his wife. It's the same thing.

I don't know. From a hungover, still drinking fan perspective, I think David Stern had a chance to laugh it up a bit and still downplay the idea as ridiculous. It could've easily been like:

Jim Rome: Was the draft fixed?
David Stern: No way Jim. No way. We love the product that our players and management put forward everyday. The NBA is alive! It's vibrant! It's a beautiful league. We have such great stars. He answered a loaded question with a loaded question that was supposed to let Rome know how dumb his question was. Matter of fact, he answered with a simple "No" in the first place, but Rome decided that wasn't enough. Conveniently, Jim still has never told us if he stopped beating his wife
