The Truth
Both parties would’ve been better off exercising greater judgment. Playing tik tok games at 3am is one of the stupidest things you can do.

Shooting someone just to be shooting them is also stupid. If you aren’t willing to possibly spend the rest of your life in prison, you better be damn sure you are within every right before pulling that trigger.
Thats why you get the rubber shells in states that have those laws..

Strictly for home defense though. Yeah you risk being in a real shootout with the first couple rounds being less-lethal, but you could also have nothing at all or be in a shootout with some sort of blunt weapon or something.

Rubber shells makes it less likely to actually take a life whether you shoot an intruder, accidentally discharge, safer around family members, etc.

They hurt like hell and can possibly kill someone if directly aimed at a major body part (head/face, heart, etc) but less likely to kill an adult and even less likelier to have yourself to in situations like this.

They rang the door bell and ran huh? How did breh get out of his bed and open the door in time to shoot them? We all have played this game before. Especially that late, you’ll be long gone before they open the door. Sounds like yall did more than play nikka knock :jbhmm:

Funny thing is this article OP posted is leaving out critical info:

Teen shot, killed by Virginia homeowner was reportedly doing TikTok challenge | FOX 5 DC

One of Butler's neighbors who spoke with FOX 5 said his home surveillance system captured video of three teens coming up to his house not long before the shooting. The video showed the teens banging, kicking and slamming on the neighbor's garage door — not just ringing the doorbell.

wonder why they left it out.... :francis:

IT was obvious. a traditional ding dong ditch would have been long gone by the time he woke up and saw what was going at 3am

The Castle Doctrine

Under Virginia's castle doctrine, a person is allowed to defend their home. They must have a sufficient belief that the individual or individuals intend to cause great bodily harm or death after entering the dwelling. In this situation, there is no duty to retreat.

If he shot them while they were outside of his house, he has a very hard uphill battle ahead of him. This is why it is always a good idea to know important laws concerning stuff like this in your own state.
Seems like he shot the dude outside when they were running away. He will need a great lawyer.

A homeowner was arrested on a murder charge after authorities say he shot and killed an 18-year-old in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. The teen’s friends told investigators the man opened fire as they recorded a prank overnight for a TikTok video.

Tyler Chase Butler, 27, was arrested and accused of second-degree murder, malicious wounding and use of a firearm in commission of a felony, the county sheriff’s office said Tuesday.

Butler is accused of killing Michael Bosworth Jr., a senior at Massaponax High School. He played lacrosse and football, and wrestled, his heartbroken stepfather told News4.

As News4 reported after the shooting at about 3 a.m. Saturday, the homeowner told investigators Bosworth and two other teens were trying to break into his home on McKenzie Lane. The sheriff’s office received a call about a residential burglary in progress in which a resident had fired shots. Bosworth was taken to a hospital, where he died.

One of the other teens, who was grazed by a bullet, told detectives they weren’t breaking in to steal anything. The teen said they were recording ding-dong ditch pranks for TikTok videos – ringing doorbells and then running away.

A detective tracked down the third teen, who was not shot. That teen gave the same account and offered their phone to show a similar video shot earlier that night.

Bosworth was shot hours before his school's prom.

Butler was being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail. Anyone with potentially relevant information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office.
Im confused as to why the title says DC.
Yeah that county is like Fredikksburg area which is closer to Richmond VA than DC..

Kicking someone’s door in broad daylight can get you fukked up, let alone at 3am. Whilst I don’t believe in guns, we can’t sit here and act someone grabbing their gun to shoot is an unreasonable act if they think a group of people are trying to break into their home.

The Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office received a call at approximately 3 a.m. regarding an incident in which three individuals allegedly attempted to break into a home in the River Club subdivision by kicking in the back door.

The resident went outside and confronted the alleged attempted intruders as they were coming from the back of the home, shooting two of them, according to the sheriff’s office.
