I don't think that something "came and went" objectively. A lot of great music doesn't even get the buzz it deserves in its time. A lot of people have died and had their music become legendary, look at classical composers who weren't famous in their time.
Let's keep our examples hip hop. Who in hip hop has died, made came-and-went music and suddenly became legendary?
Max B was never poppin like that in the mainstream but since he got 75 yrs Kanye named his album Waves and had him do the intro.
Max B is still not poppin and no one cares
My point is cultural significance is not totally defined by popularity.
Totally agree
Drake's Views is the most popular Hip Hop album in the entire 10's decade and will be probably till his next album, but is it really the most culturally significant? I'm not saying DC4 is going to have lasting impact but I'm not saying it wont. Maybe it'll be one of those things that grows maybe it wont. I'm not even a Meek fan. All I'm saying is it takes years before we can look back at something and say this was impactful and this was just a fad.
Drake is a pop rapper and not a good example. Nobody's saying that "you sell the most = most cultural significant."
But the point is that you can't come and go. Liquid Swords took 20 years to get plat, but it eventually went plat. Probably went gold back then, too. The point is... it didn't come and go. Heads loved it and it grew in acclaim over the years. There were obvious standout tracks. Strong, undeniable projects never come and go. They are always acknowledged in real time and sell respectable units. Not crazy units, but respectable.
shyt... look at Live.Love.ASAP. It wasn't radio friendly at all and it definitely hasn't come and go. Meek and Rocky had the same breakout year.
DC4 has zero standout songs. Arguably 100% trash. So it came and went
