Will be interesting who they cast as the love interest. His two most popular (and imo best) ones -Hawkgirl and Vixen- were from the animated show but neither probably make sense in this origin show, not starting off anyway. His most known one from the comics was Katma from the same pink-skinned race as Sinestro... she was his wife and a GL but got killed off like 40 years ago our time. They may just go with a completely original (or very obscure) character.
Yeah, DCU's Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) probably wouldn't make sense. Vixen is a possiblity but I don't know if they are going to use her in the DCU.
Katma Tui or a brand new love interest are the options they should take (if they are even going to cast a love interest which is not a guarantee).

I was about to say... (attractive female) love interest should be mandatory like how it is for the conventional white male leads.
Not saying she gotta be the focus over the buddy cop stuff, but we should be past the asexual black male trope
I thought she would be playing a love interest to John...but no. She's playing a younger version of his mom.
