Good read for those of you that were asking about his family ties.

"When news broke eight days ago that reigning Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel faces an NCAA investigation into whether he sold autographs, the college football world reacted with either confusion or outright skepticism. After all, the press had created an image of the Manziel family that suggested something out of TV's Dallas. Wright Thompson's recent ESPN The Magazine feature alluded to the "Texas oil fortune" that "still funds the family." As Manziel's father, Paul, told Thompson, "It's not Garth Brooks money, but it's a lot of money." If Johnny Football's so rich, the thinking went, why would he stoop to selling autographs for pocket change?

But maybe it isn't so weird. It turns out the Manziels are a much more colorful and interesting bunch than any of the profiles thus far have indicated. Their fortune was indeed made in oil—wildcatting, specifically—but there were also family sidelines in cockfighting, small-time grifting, match-fixing, and, if you believe the federal indictments, cocaine-trafficking and murder. In fact, the first great sporting success under the family name wasn't Johnny Football; it was the Manziel grey gamefowl, bred by Johnny's great-grandfather. The Manziels arrived in Texas after cockfighting was outlawed, but they wound up with a breed named after them anyway.

That's the story of the Manziels in America. It's the story of making money just this side (and occasionally that side) of the rules."

Here's another good article.

TYLER — The larger-than-life story of Heisman Trophy-winning Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel is a roller-coaster ride that defies belief — until you get to know the rest of the Manziel family.

Years before Johnny Football, there was the Syrian Kid, an oil fortune and family members accused of crimes.

Manziel's great-grandfather, Bobby Joe Manziel, was a bantamweight boxer born in Lebanon who sparred and became friends with heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey.

Manziel retired from boxing and moved to East Texas in the 1930s to try his luck in the oil fields as a wildcatter. Almost broke, Manziel asked Dempsey for $400 to drill for oil on the grounds of the Negro New Hope Baptist Church in Gladewater.

The well was a gusher. Dempsey later said that $400 gamble was the smartest investment he ever made.

Like most East Texas oil barons at the time, Bobby Joe Manziel settled down in Tyler, where the family became a household name long before the rest of Texas heard of Johnny Football.

“It's a fascinating family,” said Sam Kidd, treasurer and office manager of the Smith County Historical Society in Tyler. “There are probably more legends about the Manziels than there are actual things in writing.”

But the legends haven't always been positive. One reason Johnny Manziel's parents decided to move the family to Kerrville during his seventh-grade year was to shelter him and his younger sister from the notoriety that at times swirled around the Manziel name.

The Teo story was cool for a week or so...and then...just ugh. We get it.

Manziel comes from a rich family with oil tyc00n ties....Deadspin panning it out like they solved the JFK assassination.

But then again, I dont find Manziel too interesting either...or his family.

them grantland articles long enough
First quarter is pretty good, second quarter is kind of zzzz, then the last half is great.

They tried to cram too much info in there about the great-grandfather. I get it, he was a dirtbag and he had balls.
