You will be called a nerd if you pull over to the side of the road just to send or read a text message.
I don't bother picking up my smartphone when a text message comes in.
I'll read it when I have arrived at my destination and am parked. 10 times out of 10, the text message is never a dire emergency.
When people hear a sound from their smartphone that they received a text, they are compelled to read it and sometimes respond by typing in their text message. The problem with texting is that your eyes are off the road for multiple seconds, not fractions of a second. The curve in a road can change slightly after 3 seconds of driving at 45 MPH. Traffic lights/signs can come up. A car ahead of you can suddenly stop in the roadway because of a traffic jam.
Be safe out there and don't text and drive.
