I love your comment because their mother (a famous and beautiful Black socialite and poet in her era) WAS actually nominated for one of the biggest awards there is in the world...she was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1952 for her collection of poetry called "Spice of Dawns."
Here she is below (top left where the peach circle is) in Jet Magazine. Her maiden name back then was Vivian Ayers then after her marriage to Mr. Allen it became Vivian Ayers-Allen.
