Just after the shooting, the suspect fled the crime scene in a vehicle and was pursued by police. Nearly a mile north of the scene, the suspect crashed into a pole at Athens and Cross streets in the city's Sponge Docks tourist district, near a restaurant called Mama's Greek Cuisine. The suspect was apprehended there, said Pinellas County sheriff's spokeswoman Cecilia Barreda.

It didn't appear that anyone else was in the vehicle, Barreda said. She couldn't confirm whether the suspect was injured in the crash.

A Tarpon Springs police officer was shot and killed overnight, and a suspect has been taken into custody, authorities said.

Veteran officer Charles "Charlie K" Kondek was fatally shot sometime after 2 a.m. near 199 Grand Blvd., a few blocks from the city's Sponge Docks. He was a father of five and former New York City policeman.

The Tarpon Springs Police Department released the officer's name on its Facebook page around 11:15 a.m., saying "our hearts and prayers go out to the Kondek Family and our deepest sympathy."
