NYC had underwater train tunnels since the early 1900s

never thought of it that way.

but it also has to withstand the massive vibrations of them trains barreling through. One wrong calculation and thats a MASSIVE fukkup.

Only place I'm aware a subway tunnel passed directly under a building close to the surface was the 1 train tunnel under the old south tower of the WTC... PATH passes under the new 1 WTC but its deep in the ground though.


Pretty sure it happens when a subway route got to change streets like the B/D between 59th and 47-50th street as I would imagine keeping the tunnels under the sidewalk/street is a tight fit when the trains got to go around a curve.
