The 2011 NBA MVP is being accused of drugging and raping — along with two of his friends — a woman claiming to be his ex-girlfriend in August 2013.
The lawsuit, first reported by TMZ Sports Wednesday night, names Rose, his personal manger Randall Hampton and friend Ryan Allen. The woman, identified only as Jane Doe, claims she dated Rose from 2011 to 2013.
A spokesperson for Rose denied the shocking allegations Thursday morning.
“The plaintiff’s allegations are completely false and without any factual basis,” the statement read, via Sports Business Journal. “We have complete confidence that the case will be dismissed and that Mr. Rose will be vindicated.”
Rose’s attorney, Lisa Cohen, told TMZ Sports the lawsuit is “an attempt to shake down a highly respected and successful athlete.”
Rose’s camp did acknowledge a “non-exclusive, consensual sexual relationship with the plaintiff for over two years.”
The reported lawsuit alleges Rose invited the woman to his Beverly Hills home, where she says Rose and his friends slipped a drug into her drink with the aim of raping her. The woman was able to escape the house with a friend before Rose and his friends allegedly broke into her apartment and gang-raped her while she was incapacitated.
The woman says she waited two years to file the suit because she was embarrassed about what occurred that night.
Rose has struggled with injuries since his MVP season, missing all of the 2012-13 season and playing in just 10 games the following season. He played in 51 games last season, averaging 17.7 points, and was expected to improve his play this coming season following two knee surgeries.
