THe U.S. is common referred to as a country (geographic). "Country" is often used interchangeably with "state" or "nation-state". It should not be.

Alabama and Slovenia can both be considered "states" per the original definition of the term. As I said, a "state" in the U.S. is in reality a hybrid state/province.

EDIT: I would be curious to compare the GDP's for Alabama and Slovenia. In alot of ways, correlating the nation states of Europe to the States in the U.S> is perfectly fair. I remember reading the Economist a few years ago where they were discussing whether the European Union would make way for something more akin to the "United States of Europe"

In the most technical sense. the United States of America is a collective political entity that is a union of separate states on the North American Continent.

Population of alabama is currently 4.8 million.
Pop of slovenia is 2 million
