According to him the Lakers told him they think he's worth the midlevel (without ever making a formal offer) and to go out and find an offer and they'll match and then signed Artest the next day.
That's exactly what he was worth but he wanted more from the Lakers. I don't blame them for not fooling around and risking missing out on Artest AND Ariza. I wanted them to keep Ariza too but they did what they had to do.

Once Mitch found out that Artest wanted to be a Laker he ended negotiations with Ariza and signed Artest. Mitch thought Artest he was signing the better player.

True but it seems apparent he would've signed it if they made an offer. I think the Lakers were just stalling on him just to find out if they could close Artest or not. If they didn't then they would've thrown a formal offer to them.

Could be. We'll never know the whole story.

Some of the Ariza love is revisionist history too because he was bad the first four years (and three teams) of that deal. Only his last year in Washington once Wall came back did he look like a great role player again.
