Taylor Sheridan's 'Landman' Moves Production Out of Texas for Season 2
Story by Ernesto Valenzuela
Taylor Sheridan's hit series
Landman is currently deep into the production of its upcoming second season. When the series premiered on
Paramount+ in 2024, it became the most-watched Paramount+ original series of all time, reaching 14.9 million households globally in its first four weeks of streaming. Several of Sheridan's original series have remained flagship titles in Paramount's streaming catalog, so it makes sense that the series would receive a renewal, as even lesser well-received series in Sheridan's works, like
Mayor of Kingstown, received multiple seasons. But things are going to change behind-the-scenes
A recent report has revealed that filming of
Landman season 2 will now shift to an entirely new location for the series. The second season
of the oilfield-centric series has already completed much of its production in Texas, including Fort Worth and Jacksboro. However, the series will now film in Durant, Oklahoma, which is around 120 miles away from Fort Worth. This won't be too drastic of a change for the series, but the backdrop now being in a completely different state could have some interesting implications for the second season. The scenes to be filmed in Oklahoma will feature casinos, with casting calls being held for the production to find general background extras to portray casino patrons.
Billy Bob Thornton recently teased the scripts
and story for Landman Season 2, saying that he “loved it. Taylor knows this show very well; he’s got a vision for it, so it’s pretty easy. I didn’t expect to read it and go, ‘Wait a minute, hang on here.’ It was great.” The second season of the series will also add Sam Elliot as a series regular. Thornton would also comment on Elliot's involvement, telling The Hollywood Reporter that "It’s been awesome. I’ve known Sam since the ’80s, so he and I go way back
Landman' Season 2 Will Feature a Change in Backdrops & Directors
It will be interesting to see if there will be any significant change in direction or tone with the next season of
Landman. Taylor Sheridan, who directed the first two episodes and wrote the entire first season,
has reportedly stepped back from the series due to his involvement with numerous other projects. Now, Stephen Kay will be directing the entirety of
Landman Season 2, which shouldn't come as a surprise since Kay had already directed a majority of the episodes in the first season.
Thornton had spoken in the past about wanting to work on
Landman as long as he is wanted on the show, and that Sheridan has an engaging story to tell. Most of the actor's comments about the show have emphasized Sheridan's skills as a writer, with Thornton expressing his excitement for the series' future and how the relationships between the characters continue to evolve. The fast turnaround for the series is also incredibly exciting, and it demonstrates the show's immense popularity.
With filming currently progressing smoothly and expected to wrap in August, the series is likely to meet its
already confirmed release date of November 2025, which is impressive considering that the final episode of the first season aired in January 2025. The first season of the series received a 78% "Fresh" rating on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes and a 64% audience score. Hopefully, the second season will maintain the show's quality (and possibly even improve it) with its new locales and story beats, even if Sheridan won't be involved in a directorial capacity.
