Deming firefighters resign, demand better wages

DEMING, N.M. – 14 of the 21 firefighters and EMS workers at the Deming Fire Department have put in notice of resignation.

They are demanding better wages. Their protest continued Monday in Deming.

“The mayors, city administrators, how come we're not important to them? How come the community thinks we're important, but how come they think we're not important? That's the one thing, like why? I don't get it,” said Robert Sanchez, president of the New Mexico Professional Firefighters Association.

Sanchez called on city leaders for change.

“We all know in public safety we didn't get into for the money. We all know that. We have to be fair and compensate our firefighters and our EMS providers,” said Sanchez.

City officials have already posted job openings – entry-level pay is just over $35,000 a year. However, firefighters are not on a typical 40-hour work week schedule. Sanchez said that boils down to just under $12 an hour.

“They're making almost minimum wage, almost less than fast-food workers.”

A pay stub from a firefighter with 13 years under his belt showed an hourly rate of $13.45. Many said that's a small price, for a huge sacrifice.

City officials said those workers did get a 6.5% raise last year. KOB 4 asked for additional information, but the city administrator did not answer any follow-up questions.

In some places, Firefighters are volunteer positions taken up by members of the community. They should thank their lucky stars they’re getting paid. :mjpls:

That ain't much for a hero

None of the actual important jobs in this country are paid what they should be. Chris Rock said it best if the police suck in this country it's because the police in this country are underpaid... and you pay for what you get.

No reason firefighters are struggling to make ends meet, yet people in the financial sector who are essentially leeches off everyone else live lavish. Which job is more important at the end of the day, you're not calling your investment banker to save you when your house catches on fire.

Deming is where I'm going to retire. A couple years ago you could get an acre for $600
and that's why they get paid what they get paid

do people want to raise taxes or whatever other public revenue income source to pay them more. take it to a vote in their own community

If the city wanted to slightly increase property taxes to pay ems/fire id be ok with it. You absolutely need those services

What their neglecting in this article is context. The population of deming, New Mexico is 13,000. What budget you think this city is getting from the state?

the median rent is $500
Average monthly expenses with people with mortgages is $850, meaning mortgage and utilities.
Average household price is $95,000

Starting salary for fire fighters in nyc is $45,000, where the average home is 700K plus and a one bedroom is $2200. Let’s cry a river for the people in Deming, New Mexico. It’s hard out there.

$12/hr to run in burning buildings?

AptShallowBovine-max-1mb.gif

It's the volunteers that ruin it for the paid guys. Why pay guys to run into burning buildings when you have Cacs willing to do it for free to be deemed a "hero" and for the thrill.

I had a homie who was a fire fighter for about a year before he quit. He said he wasn’t prepared for people dying on him all the time. He said the last straw was when they was in a house to get a body from a shooting and they had him go to the basement to look for some shyt and he ran into another dead body. He was like, it would have been one thing if he was prepared but he wasn’t and that was the final straw:pachaha:
