The unpopularity is based solely on someone calling a subset of americans for polling while asking a series of questions such as 'do you think boys should play girls sports or vice versa'.
There is no additional context to these questions but then they are used to reinforce narratives that are favorable to which ever political party.
The exact same thing is being done with illegal immigration, look it up. Pollsters are asking "Do you support detaining and deporting criminal immigrants" 50%+ support this. Then they will ask "Do you support deporting working immigrants, immigrants who have been here 20+ years or immigrants who have american born children" 80%+ do not support this but guess what's happening.
