The democratic party would rather lose in the general than let someone like Bernie win the primaries. The process will be adjusted so such a candidate would lose. We all saw what happened when Bernie last ran and they thought he might beat Biden. Everybody pulled out of the race at the drop of a dime and threw their support behind Biden. You're right the democratic party will only allow a certain type of candidate to the top of the ticket. There couldn't be a Trump in this party that the establishment doesn't like but is tolerated because they'd crush that type of candidate with all their might. The republicans didn't really fight against Trump. Even they ones that were vocally against him fell back in line.

Dems did NOT have a supermajority in either chamber back then. So that's false. A supermajority is around 67 votes in the Senate and 290 in the House, which Dems didn't have.

Also, Obama did want the public option, but getting that wasn't simple. He had to deal with unified Republican opposition, and there were a lot more conservative Democrats in Congress back then. People like Joe Lieberman (a Dem-leaning independent: fukk him!), Blanche Lincoln, Mary Landrieu, Ben Nelson, Tim Johnson, etc.
