People who talk like this aren't actually concerned about fraud, waste, or the integrity of these programs. They only pretend to care long enough to weaponize isolated scandals, attach it to racist myths about immigrants being a burden, and then use that to argue the programs should be gutted or never expanded. They don't have a real ideology. They have talking-points and nothing else.

What's there to gloss over? If he's already said he doesn't want Hakeem to be primaried then it's not a surprise he wouldn't support a challenge to his leadership position. He's not targeting Hakeem, probably for the same reason as his answer to that debate question about what foreign country would you first visit as Mayor. He's doggedly focused on NYC's municipal politics, not playing the national political game.
