NBC poll shows Newsom and Harris less popular than Trump who is at 47% approval. I think while Newsom is the front-runner it's probably less of a lock than I was feeling.

If Trump is back up to 47% approval midterms definitely won't go well for Dems
As far as 2028, IMO nobody should be considered the frontrunner until after midterms. It's too early.

I agree it’s embarrassing but what’s most important is why Newsom feels like he has to backtrack at the expense of taking a political hit

I dont think this is true, Trump has been polling in the 30's for the past few months and I dont think that a war that STARTED OUT unpopular (even the Iraq war was polling high at the start) is going to change that.
Low 40's could be somewhat believable but the poll you are referring to may be an outlier

Don't underestimate the ability of right-wing social media to sway public opinion. Especially considering who owns most of them these days.
You're not wrong about the ownership of social media, but there is a limit to even that when the guy who promised to drive prices down is actively implementing policies to make things more expensive as well as making the lives of ordinary people worse (tarriffs, cutting food stamps, Healthcare, starting stupid wars that drive up gas prices, etc.).
A right wing influencer can't do much to change the reality that you are now paying more in the grocery store, at the gas pump, etc, and you see that the guy you voted for is focused on everything except the primary reason you voted for him.
