It's a form of escapism for them. Though those same dudes were dusty bums in the past, they could be optimistic because they were still young and could look to the future. Those days are over now and their future is as equally bleak as their present, and they feel that there's no way to change it. So, they're stuck in their juvenile fantasies of 20-30 years ago to avoid facing their sad reality.

I watch a lot of old nyc crack era crimes and see many cases of families and kids getting wiped out.
Nowadays women that get killed are often just as involved in the BS.
