I remember there was a dope Eddie Murphy interview where he dropped gems about show business and said:

"People don't come to see the character. They come to see Eddie Murphy as the character. Thats whats most important"

And it made a whole load of sense and why so many stars play it the same way, again and again. Just like you said about the bricks when they veer outside the lane as most people are just simple Simons. Probably why we see so many sequels. The quote still doesn't explain Eddies strange run of picks but the truth is obvious in what he said once you see it.

Word to Hector.

When Denzel does take on more creative roles, fans don’t seem to support him.

“Fences” only generated 64 million in revenue. And that’s probably just because it’s a famous play that even at the time was successful on Broadway. To be fair 64 million isn’t nothing but it isn’t The Matrix either.

“The Tragedy of MacBeth” probably lost money. Even though it had Oscars buzz.

“Roman J Israel” lost money for sure.

Fans like Denzel in Training Day and Equilizer and other action movies and then whine that he’s become predictable as an actor.
him doing more artsy flicks was never going to get more fan support than straight up blockbusters.

i would've liked to have seen him in more sci fi type stuff though.

Only problem with this approach is actors eventually get old and forgotten with time. Fictional Characters are immortal.
people 6 generations from now will check out a statwars movie from 1978 because darth vader is cool. they not gonna give af about eddie murphy in six generations though. They cashed in on their immediate popularity at the expense of having a timeless catelog

Someone asked Denzel why he doesn’t do more comedies and he said he isn’t offered those roles. I feel like that was 10 years ago.

I thought he should do comedies.

Even Robert De Niro sprinkled those in during his career.

Midnight Run in 1988.
Analyze This, and Meet the Parents in the late 1990s.

Stuff like that can help your career and let people see another side of you.

Or maybe Denzel is happy doing what he’s doing. 🤷🏽‍♂️

You think most people back when cared about any of these things? Show-business is just a job at the end of the day because the prime driver is money. That artistic ish is for the birds and previously the talent were even allowed to dream of ownership. Even now they get token vanity roles in the credits etc.. but a few have wised up on the IP tip and are aiming big.

Back to Training Day, anyone ever think how wild it is that its basically the tale of Suge's friends and DRs off the books, blue but we're red muscle?

A proper Death Row series done well would get so many views as its insane when you think of the Feds, the bangers, the rappers, the F-ery and everything else that was happening in the rap game back then.

Denzel fell off after training day and it’s a damn shame
He really did. His legacy is secured but other than Flight, he hasn’t given a great performance. Fences was okay but he’s Denzel, he could’ve given more. Now, he just straight mails roles in. That cop movie he did with Leto, it’s like he didnt want to do the movie while doing the movie.

Also Flight, Inside Man, Out of Time, John Q, Deja Vu, American Gangster Equalizer movies were good. Pelham 123, Manchurian candidate Book of Eli were decent.

Has Denzel ever done like a truly wack movie? Like Pluto Nash level wack? I haven't seen all his movies especially his earlier stuff so iunno.
