Okay so we know blks are the most resilient, strongest race in the world. We are constantly bombarded with bullshyt and we Harlem shake it off with a pithy joke and a blunt and keep it moving.
But we don't escape everything done to us unscathed and there are a LOT of blks who are suffering from depression and hopelessness, especially my males. Below are a few tips to help b/c you can't let the dominions of despair win!
1.) Vitamin D. In the winter, we get less sunlight, more overcast days and end up feeling horrid. Take a supplement. It truly helps to improve ur mood.
2.)No more lone wolf. It's okay. We left the whole independence shyt in the 90s. Too many young blk men and women are by themselves without a sense of community or others to lean on.
It impacts everything b/c having people to nurture and encourage u can mean the difference between thriving or succumbing to those long dark nights. Join support groups, create ur own. Establish exercise groups, cook and go grocery shopping with friends. Establish a weekend day and time where u and everybody get together and plan and dream.
3.) In times of despair...PLAN! You don't have time to give up. The majority of shyt that happens to us is in our hands to fix. Accountability is power. Capitalize on ur strengths and work on ur weaknesses. If there is something u can't change immediately, stop wasting time worrying about it. Redirect and widdle it down from a different angle.
4.) Sex and relationships. Don't fool urself. Sex and relationships affect who u are. No matter how "tough" u think you are, running thru people can have as big an impact as no interaction with the opposite sex. Guard urself. Life is already hard and turning to irresponsible sexual practices will only make things harder. Do not fukk without protection. Do not have illegitimate children. Establish a good relationship with someone with a healthy disposition that is positive and looking to build. Otherwise, abstain and work on yourself.
5.) Plants/animals/children.-The trifecta of joy. Grow something, take care of something, nurture someone. It provides purpose and teaches you about urself. Go volunteer to read to children, grow a plant or a garden, volunteer with animals at shelters. These are humbling experiences that put us in touch with deeper parts of ourselves. They are also INSTANT mood lifters. Fascinating in their own right. And free. There is nothing like watching some seeds grow out of some dirt in some seeders.
6.) Cleanliness. I don't care where you live. Projects or suburbs. Mansion or a sugar shack. It should be IMMACULATELY clean. Oftentimes we get depressed about our environments and that leads to us giving up. If u only got an air mattress and a damn folding chair, clean the floor, tuck the chair away and wipe everything down until u get more. Cleanliness has an impact on our mental health as well.
7.) Genuine active metime. Time for meditation, thinking, self-reflection, pondering, mental journeys, prayer, emotional organization and exploration. If you do 8 things a day, make sure 4 of them are for you.
8.) Get Out Of Your Head. Procrastination kills. And it's all because we get too shook to face enormous tasks. Anxiety sets in and suddenly we are living in our heads. Don't think about it. Just go. Starting is the hardest part. Most things aren't NEARLY as hard as we think they are. Sometimes u just have to move.
Hope this helps! Any other tips?!
