Marlins CEO Derek Jeter 'not going' to Yankees series in Bronx

Jeter: 'Awkward' to be in Bronx, will skip series

MIAMI -- The Miami Marlins opened a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night at Marlins Park. But it's their next series that has CEO Derek Jeter atypically off his game.

The Marlins are set play a quick two-game series against the Yankees, Jeter's former team, beginning Monday in the Bronx. Jeter says he will make the trip but will not attend either of the games, this despite being a fan-favorite over his illustrious 20-year career donning pinstripes.

"I went to a spring training game when we played New York, but it would be an awkward situation for me to actually go to Yankee Stadium," Jeter said.

The last time Jeter stepped foot in Yankee Stadium he was having his number retired and his plaque adorned in the stadium's famed Monument Park last May.

Jeter, who has always been economical with his words, was rather matter of fact when addressing his possible attendance.

"I'm just being honest with you guys, so that's why I'm not going," he said.

While many Yankees fans will lament the fact that their team's former captain will not be attending that series, Jeter has his own attendance issues to deal with -- as in the Marlins' fan attendance and lack there of at Marlins Park.

The team posted abysmal attendance numbers this week, averaging 6,556 fans in a three-game series with the New York Mets.

It was its lowest reported totals since 2006, and the lowest since moving to Marlins Park in 2012.

However, reported attendance numbers by the Marlins have been suspect for years. Many games had a noticeably lower number of fans in the stands than the official attendance reported.

Having a more accurate count is something the new ownership group, led by Jeter, seeks.

"One of the qualities of running a first-class organization is honesty, and we have been and we will continue to run this organization, we're going to be transparent and we're going to be honest about it," Jeter said. "And reporting paid attendance as the number of tickets sold is the way we're going to report it. Our focus will continue to be increasing the turnstile numbers here at Marlins Park."

Jeter is not happy with the low attendance numbers.

"We're going to report tickets sold as our paid attendance," he said. "I don't want to get into what was done in the past, but that's how we're going to do it here. We're not happy with it. We have to grow those numbers, but I think reporting it that way gives us an opportunity to show some growth over time."

The Marlins are last in the majors in attendance at 12,641 a game and have the second-worst record in baseball entering Friday at 3-9. This weekend's series with the Pirates could be another series of low attendance numbers.

"Our No. 1 focus is how we can win more games in this park, and winning more games is a part of it," Jeter said. "We have to win some more games. I've heard people say, 'Miami is a tough sports town.' I think that's every sports town. If you put a winning product on the field, then people will come. We have some exciting young players and hopefully we can get on a little streak starting tonight."

The Marlins have struggled with a cast of new faces after stars Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna, Christian Yelich, and Dee Gordon were dealt in the offseason when Jeter took over.

"I like the grit and the fight the team is showing," Jeter said. "We've been tied or had the lead in 10 of those 12 games. We're developing a winning culture here. Sometimes it takes a little bit of time, but I like how the guys are at least going about their business. No one is happy with the results. If you go in the clubhouse, they'll tell you the same thing, but it's a long season."

Not just that but baseball needs to realize that the state of Florida does not care about baseball.

They better hope something comes out of the Stanton trade because it looks like Jeter colluded with the Yankees the way that shyt went down...why would Marlins fans support that franchise in the wake of that trade?

True but they could do okay if they put a solid team out there. Every time the Marlins get something going they strip the team down and do a fire sale. They are constantly rebuilding.

Nobody wanna sit out there in the fukking 98 degree hot humid ass weather to watch a bullshyt team.

At least Stanton was fun to watch. They have nobody now. Jeter as good of a player as he was... is a WORSE front man for an organization. He should get the fukk out now and go sell Jordan cleats or some shyt because he is terrible at this. He's terrible when the media hold his ass to the fire too. They see through the bullshyt. Him not attending the series in the Bronx is a bytch move.

:russ: At blaming Jeter when the marlins have always had shytty attendance. Their excuse for getting a new stadium is because no one was going to drive up to Miami Gardens now that they got one no one is going. Everyone knows how bandwagon Miami fans are:yeshrug:

Wish the orange bowl was still there:mjcry:

Who the hell would wanna watch baseball with all the other shyt to do around the city. :mjlol:

That stadium was piff though, one of best parks I've stood outside of. Shout out to the breezy working security who gave us some fire eat options too. :whew: even they security guards looking like JLo

It looks that way but truth be told that's not what happened. Jeter tried to deal Stanton to St. Louis and Stanton deaded the deal. Stanton had a no trade clause and only listed the 4 best teams in the league as options. It only looks shady because it was the Yankees, but fans woulda felt better if the Marlins DONATED Stanton to either the Cubs, Astros or Dodgers instead of trading him to the Yankees which doesn't make sense.

The stadium has a retractable roof homie. The stadium itself is nice and if they ever had a good team would really be conducive to a lit home field advantage.

Jeter just doesn't wanna be seen at Yankee Stadium cuz he knows we'll chant Thank You Jeter every time Stanton hits.

Yankee fans are gonna be too busy marking out over Donnie Baseball coming back. This might actually be only the 2nd time he's been back since he stopped playing which is crazy when you think about it.

The organization has two championships bruh...

Tampa was consistently good for about 3 or 4 years. The people just don't care.

Yeah, the Marlins have always had tragic attendance. I don’t get why people are making Jeter the scapegoat. He’s made bad moves. But even with Stanton, Ozuna, and the other players they moved in the off season their attendance was still awful. This article is from the beginning of last season.

Crowd of reportedly 1,590 shows up for Marlins-Phillies day game in Miami

The Miami Marlins didn’t take on the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday in an empty stadium, but they came close. According to Associated Press reporter Steve Wine, just 1,590 fans came to the afternoon game at Marlins Park.

Tampa's situation would change with a new stadium in Tampa (because then they could keep their players)

The Marlins' situation is more messed up than that. That team never kept a promise and finessed the whole city to the point where there's a nice ass stadium that they wish wasn't there.
