The 2005 NL MVP was Albert Pujols.
And frankly, there's no real argument against Pujols that season.
He slashed .330/.430/.609 for a total OPS of 1.039
He had 41 HR and 117 RBI and led the NL with 129 Runs Scored. And he stole 16 bases.
His WAR value was 8.4 which is exceptional.
It may surprise people to know that Derrek Lee had an equally fantastic season in 2005.
He slashed .335/.418/.662 for a total OPS of 1.080.
He had 46 HR and 107 RBI and had 120 Runs Scored.
His WAR value was 7.7, hurt a bit because he wasn't quite as good as Albert defensively at the time.
Even so, Lee finished 3rd in the NL MVP voting that season behind Pujols and Andruw Jones.
Unfortunately, Lee's 2005 Cubs finished 4th in the NL Central going 73-89 while Pujols' Cardinals won the division with a 100-62 record.
Over the years, people have forgotten much about the 2000s decade and all most remember is how great Bonds, Pujols and A-Rod were. But a number of other players had fantastic performances and Derrek Lee's was one of them.
