He'll never be the same

Derrick Rose could miss 8 to 12 months, doctor says - Chicago Sun-Times

“It could take eight to twelve months,” he said. “Sometimes shorter, sometimes longer. It could take him more than a year to be back to pre-surgery level of performance.

He might be done, and he's not a really skilled player anyway.

His game is mostly athleticism

Well this is true for anyone. The first part of it is just rehab. The second part of it is the adjustment, but after that you should be back to normal.

The 8-12 month window is scary as hell though.

Who knows if he'll ever return the same? But with the advancement in sports medicine, and his work ethic there's also a chance he can become a better player in the long run.

why compare him to Penny?

He came back before he was supposed to and did more damage in 1998.

I don't see how he could become a better player than the player he could have become WITHOUT the injury.
