Activision Blizzard Inc. (ATVI), the largest U.S. video-game maker, said its highly-anticipated shooter title, Destiny, generated $500 million in revenue in its first day.

Destiny, in which players act as the guardians of the last city on Earth, went on sale at more than 11,000 midnight openings around the world on Sept. 9, Santa Monica, California-based Activision said today in a statement. At $60 a copy, it was the most pre-ordered game in history that wasn’t a sequel, according Cowen & Co. analyst Doug Creutz.

A strong start is crucial for Destiny. For most games of this genre, almost 40 percent of sales for the first year are generated within first five days of release, Creutz said. Activision is spending as much as $500 million to make and market Destiny, making it one of the industry’s most expensive games ever.

By comparison, last year’s Grand Theft Auto V generated $800 million worldwide forTake-Two Interactive Software Inc. (TTWO)on its first day last September, making it the biggest video-game debut.

Activision rose 0.3 percent to $23.81 at the close in New York. The shares haveadvanced 34 percent this year.

Mike Hickey, an analyst with Benchmark Co. in New York, said in an e-mail that the Destiny game was expected to draw 10 million players on its first day, after a record 4.6 million had tested the July beta release.

The game was made in conjunction with Bungie Inc., the studio that created the Halo game for Xbox. It’s released for Sony Corp. (6758)’s PlayStation and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox consoles. The company is offering a version of the game bundled with a white PlayStation 4.

“Destiny, we think, will be the most successful new intellectual property that’s ever been released,” Chief Executive Officer Bobby Kotick said in an August interview.

What else are you gonna use? You can't buy every game that comes out and not every game has a demo/beta
Combination of demos/betas/streams/word of mouth.

Those "professional" reviewers are a joke. Game companies buy reviews. Theres been many cases of the studios providing free shyt to them. Studios pay for the advertising found on the websites. Threaten to pull support if they dont get favourable reviews.

Just look at the mass effect 3 debacle at ign. Or kane and lynch at gamespot.

"Professional" reviewers will lie straight to your face. Some of my favorite games got shyt reviews and some of the worst games i ever played got great reviews.

Anybody using reviews as a metric to decide what games to buy is a dumb ass. Its like listening to top 10 radio to decide what music you like.

I also have a huge game library. Ive never felt the need to buy day 1. I have tons of games to play. Id rather wait 6 months before all the initial hype is dead and real opinions are out there, patches have fixed all the problems the games had(first day buyers are the new qa department) and the gane is probably half price.

Those are one offs. If we're going by your theory then Destiny should be getting 10s with all that marketing they put into it. Same with Titanfall.

Metacritic aggregates reviews. The good will outweigh the bad and even out. Don't disregard all reviews cuz of a few bad apples. Metacritic hasn't done me wrong. I learned about a lot of great games that way (including indies). It's also saved me money on the big hype games that turn out to be duds. I'm a big fan of metacritic and will support it wholeheartedly. I check it monthly to see if I've missed anything. They don't just use big name reviewers on that site. They aggregate a lot. It's like a meta analysis.

Its not a theory. If youre relying on gamin journalism to decide your opinion you lost. Its well known to be completely corrupt nonsense.

Metacritic is for people too lazy to research a game and want a number attached to something subjective as OPINION. Opinions swayed by behind the scenes shyt.

According to metacritic dark souls 2 is the best game of the souls series. :heh: any fan of the series will tell you its the worst one.

Fallout 3s reviews crush fallout new vegas but a considerable portion of people prefer new vegas.

Look at titanfall. It got all the hype in the world and great reviews. A month later it was forgotten. How do you review a mp game in a couple days in special servers just for reviewers :heh:

Let other peoples opinion form your opinion brehs.

Alpha/Beta were released and the majority of ppl who played them enjoyed it and bought the game. Reviews would not have had an effect. People really think this game pulled the wool over ppl. This gen is already being ruined by entitled brats
