In 2001-2004 the Pistons built around young vets and remained cap flexible eventually parlaying it into Rasheed Wallace who was a top 5 big at the time and won the title. Dumars tried it again many times since, signing young vets to the cheap and waiting for them to flourish in Detroit. Remember Kwame Brown? Remember dumping Arron Afflalo and Amir Johnson to get Chris Wilcox? Flip Murray? Jarvis Hayes?
The NBA has changed. Either you can build it the Oklahoma City way around your lottery picks, the Boston way in which they stockpiled so much youth and picks they got KG and Allen, or the Lakers/Heat way ($). Which way works for the Pistons? Obviously the OKC or Boston way. Rudy Gay helps with neither. We should take Biedrins expiring contract from GSW and get that 2014 first. I believe we can send the GSW 1st to Charlotte next June, keep our pick and get someone good in the much improved draft. Im not saying tank this season too, but I hated this years draft. Id hate it even more if KCP and Tony Mitchell are sitting the fukking bench. Either they can play or they cant, so I want to see the youth out there so they can successfully keep building.
I hear you, but you
are saying that. Do they just continue playing average to bad until they finally draft a lebron? Who is detroits best draft picks in post bad boys history? Grant hill....and...tayshaun price...? You say nobody wants to play in detroit...Theyve always built conference contenders through trades and signings...rip, sheed, billups, ben wallace, jerry stackhouse, all were acquired.
At some point you need to combine your youth with solid experience. This is a step in that direction if it happens. Either gay, igoudala, or smith. Neither are tier zero players but they can make for a great ensemble team which detroit has always flourished in.
I dont want to give the impression, btw, that i think youre full of shyt or anything, you clearly know your stuff, we just have a different perspective it seems.
