Did any other moment in gaming astonish you than realizing the size of the San Andreas map?

After "GTA 3" the formula was already in place, so seeing more of it (albeit, done better) in subsequent games never had the same effect as seeing 3 for the first time.

One of the biggest :ohhh:moments in gaming for me was the first time I played "Tomb Raider". The first one on Saturn/PS1. Moving around in large 3D environments was still a relatively new concept back then....and while "Mario 64" did it first, I never got the sense it was a connected world....each area was self contained. Obviously there was limitations to where you could go in "Tomb Raider" but it never felt like it at the time. And that was mind blowing.

Yea breh. The mind blowing jump from 2d to 3D is something younger brehs will never understand. I could barely even control Mario the first time I played.

2D to 3D is the single biggest jump in gaming history. Every thing since then has been incremental steps.

The only thing comparable, would be if VR becomes completely seamless. And that's still a ways off, maybe not even in our life time.

  • Seeing Mario 64 for the first time at Toys R Us
  • Playing Indigo Prophecy. The controls and story telling style was something I had never seen before.
  • Final Fantasy 7. A game spanning multiple discs never occurred to me. The cut scenes were incredible at the time.
  • Eternal Darkness had some genius ways of screwing with the player that I haven't seen implemented to that degree ever since. (Psychomantis in MGS is similar, but nothing on the level of Eternal Darkness)
  • Metal Gear Solid will always be special to me. The story, gameplay, voice acting, etc. It all set itself apart from every other game before it.
  • Clocktower for PS1. The point and click adventure aged like milk, but at the time, there was no other game that had tension like Clocktower. That fast music and potential for instant death every time scissor man appeared is something I'll never forget. Resident Evil 3 came close with the appearance of Nemesis.
