In the midst of this call for reparations to be made to black people, many of those expressing skepticism have questioned the financial literacy of its presumed recipients and suggested that the money will be wasted if its distribution involves checks being cut to them. Isn't this an inherently racist line of questioning, an assumption built upon stereotypes rather than reality? When reparations were made to the survivors of the Holocaust, did Jews express doubt about the practicality of the money going into the hands of Jewish people? Did they criticize the ones who spearheaded the reparations effort as shortsighted? Why are there black people echoing white supremacist talking points when discussing the reparative solutions to our community's historic oppression?
