That's a true statement, but there were a lot of black players better than Jackie back then. Jackie was the best choice because of his background (education, military, etc.) and age. Branch had to have a guy that could handle the racism that was inevitably going to be thrown at him, and Robinson...who I think was a Lieutenant in the Army...had the discipline and intelligence to handle it sensibly. Josh was considered the black Babe Ruth, but he had a lot of health issues (mentally). He deserved a shot, but he couldn't be the first.
