Monster hits put you at a level where the expectation for followup are sky high.

Happened to MJ

Happened to Bobby Brown on Dont Be Cruel

Impossible to match the impact or sales of monster albums, and artists, producers , and labels second guess everything

Humpin' Around was a terrible follow up.

I feel like he got away fron what made Confessions a great rnb album.

He got away from JD, away from BCox, away Jimmy Jam and TL at least somewhat.

I think he wanted to compete with Timberlake at that time. And thus why he started making the type of songs he was making.

88701 and Confessions are his opus. But it probably didn't have to be that way

Usher takes a break every 2-3 years…

I don’t think he’s gonna make the same album twice.

At the end of the day, he isn’t washed is in full demand.

Surprisingly enough, the other albums managed to sell units.

Raymond vs Raymond was one of the best R&B albums of that year back in 2010 !!! I still bump it to this day

mad artist would kill to have a MONUMENTAL album like that. Just like in the rap world where DoggyStyle, Illmatic, OB4CL, those are projects most artist spend their whole career trying to achieve. When you have 1 that's all you need. it's VERY VERY VERY RARE to have 2.

Usher had a nice edm europop run after confessions with the Raymond album, omg hitting number one in 2010 gave him 3 number ones in 3 decades, then went the chris brown route and started making ratchet music

Does anyone know why artists leave that JD well so often? Is that nikka fee structure outrageous or something?

I don’t understand how he took Usher career to the stratosphere and then they don’t make another album together.

Why didn’t Mariah Carey go make another with him?

Alot of artists don’t want to feel like they owe their careers to one person. Also alot of artists want to try something different and flex different creative muscles. Its the same reason MJ didn’t keep working with Quincy Jones after their legendary trilogy of albums, he pivoted to working with Teddy Riley because he wanted to try his hand at New Jack Swing. Its the same reason Nas didn’t just work with Premier, Q-Tip, and Pete Rock his entire career. Its why Jay gave Kanye and Just Blaze a shot, why Common moved on from No I.D. for a time, and so on and so forth. Artists want to try their hand at new sounds and subject matter. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t.

and that's the BIGGEST mistake they'll ever make. Don't they realize that HALF the reason the fans love them is because of the SOUND they have? It's the reason why most of Wu couldn't have success after 99, because they pivoted away from RZA on their albums. EVERYONE LOVED WU because of RZA's sound and even RZA f'd that up cuz he switched up his sound :mjlol:

It's the same thing with Guru on why he didn't do as well going the solo route with other producers for his albums, nobody was tryna hear him on anything other than Preemo beats, same as Jeru. Artist undervalue the SOUND that got them there.

Part of it is ego and part of it is financial. Artists ain't trying to hear that their success or even part of it is due their producer. They believe it's their talent so they move away to show that they are the reason for their success. Also the financial aspect in that now they are a much bigger name they can make bigger demands. So say the deal is 75/25 split towards JD. Well next album Usher would want a 50/50 split at minimum. JD may not want to come down off his rate so Usher moves to a lesser known producer who is willing to let him keep a much bigger split.

A good example was Boyz II Men. There wasn't big money to be made off pure album sales back then. The biggest money was in having publishing. So even though they had smash hits with Babyface writing all the big hits he was likely seeing a bigger portion of the money off those hits. So after II they came back wanting some of that writing money so decided to take a bigger hand in producing and writing to get a bigger cut of the overall money being generated.
