The interpretations I saw were either that one, that he didn't understand and thought the taxi driver was cursing at him in some other language.

Or that he did understand, and the idea of someone telling him that God was great, didn't vibe with him. The feelings he has for a man doesn't match up with God's teachings and he was trying to run away from those beliefs. Saying God is great is in a way on Frank.
